Porn Leads In Download-To-DVD Movies

One of the reasons why Video2000, a video-cassette system vastly superior to VHS and Betamax, wasn’t any commercial success at all was that they didn’t allow porn on V2000-cassettes – or so I remember.

Of course, that can have been an urban myth but it shows my point. It was always porn, which was spearheading new technologies. Be it video cassettes (“death to cinemas”), be it paid content on the Internet or be it video on demand (well, as far this goes, it is still a long way to go, but…). This is the reason why I wasn’t really surprised to read this today:

Adult entertainment giant Vivid Entertainment Group said on Wednesday it will start next month selling downloadable movies that viewers can burn to DVD and watch on their TVs (Porn Leads In Download-To-DVD Movies – by ExtremeTech)

And again, download-to-own is, of course, a nice solution, though I think it’s only a transition to “pay-per-view” for movies. The real issue behind is that everybody else in the media industry is talking about introducing such services, but the porn industry just does it and not merely talk about it.

We’ll see how much it’ll cost, but I think the porn industry really knows where to go, how to get there and what their customers … er, well, … want.

The conclusion? Well, watch out what the porn industry does next…
